Chloé volunteered with us on the Veterinary Internship in Puerto Jimenez in December of 2025. This is her review.

Veterinarian Dr. Fallas and Chloé

My experience as a volunteer at Osavet in Puerto Jimenez has been an incredible experience. From day one, I had the opportunity to assist in the operating room and to take part in everyday tasks. Doctor Ricardo always took his time to explain to me how the clinic operates, the different tasks of the job and allowed me to assist him with various patients. Even though my level of Spanish is only intermediate, everybody has been very kind and patient in explaining (even more than once) how certain things should be done.
A special thanks also to Doctora Fallas, who took her time to clarify many details in English. And when neither of the doctors were available, I always had the opportunity to learn from the lovely assistants. Among the many things I have learned, I now know how to disinfect wounds, apply sterile dressings, know how the lab machines work and interpret blood test results.
But most importantly, I have been taught how to understand animal behavior and handle animals effectively. It may seem easy or even obvious, but the assistants have shown me the correct way to transport a dog, when to be cautious in certain situations, and how to act accordingly.
During my stay I have lived with a family, with my private room and bathroom. My guest family was also very kind and welcoming – they always made sure I had everything and always asked me if everything was okay.
Janina Schan, founder of Green Life Volunteers, was an absolute asset in helping me organize my arrival and providing all the information I needed to ensure I was well-prepared for Puerto Jimenez. She was also available to every question I had, ranging from tips on the best tourist agencies to the best place to have dinner.
I can confidently say that if you are studying to become a vet, or are considering becoming one in the future, this is the perfect experience to explore the different aspects of the profession.
You truly get to see what it takes not only physically, but also emotionally and mentally. And at the same time, you have the opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful countries in the world and to be surrounded by its incredible wildlife.
